FAA's
P402 Mix - May One Day Be In Your Driveway
Originally
engineered for the Federal Aviation Administration for runway
surfacing, the P402 asphalt mix design allows water to permeate
through its surface and eliminate runoff. The polymer modified porous
friction course was developed to quickly remove surface water from
runways to eliminate hydroplaning and increase friction for aircraft
takeoff and landings. In the summer of 2001 Anderson Brothers
resurfaced the primary runway #5/23 at the Brainerd Crow Wing County
Airport using this very mix design. The runway is 6,500 feet in length
and 150' wide. In the fall of 2001 Anderson Brothers received an award
from the State of Minnesota's Department of Transportation for this
project deemed "Best in its class". The P402 mix design has been
installed at the International Falls Airport and has performed well
through several winters. The mix design is made up of 95% crushed
aggregate of which most is sized between 3/8" - 3/4". The larger
aggregate selection with the low volume of smaller or finer aggregate
sizes produces a very porous yet stable mix.
As stormwater runoff issues become more prevalent with the increasing
amounts of impervious surfaces, Anderson Brothers is redesigning and
testing the P402 mix for parking lot and driveway applications. The
primary goal is to allow stormwater to penetrate through the asphalt
surface and down into the soils where it can be absorbed for a
filtrating recharge of the ground water rather than running off as it
does on conventional impervious surfaces. Several engineering issues
in the redesign of this mix are;1) keeping stability in the sub-base
while allowing water to pass through it, 2) keeping the cost of the
mix affordable. While alternative environmentally sound products often
cost more than their counter products it is important that the
solutions remain obtainable within private and commercial
developments. Currently the P402 mix can run 2-3 times the cost of a
regular asphalt mix design.
